7.3 3 – new things and old ways – will old tactics work with mobile technologies? 9 years, 5 months agoAfter reading the article about the use of mobile phones in learning and how it is spreading like bush fire among our 21st century learners, I have been convinced that our teaching must be tailored to the way our learners can understand. Even though it is still a gimmick in our secondary schools for any learner to carry and use a mobile phone in…[Read more]

Sulaiman,
This is the greatest of problems we faced in the teaching and learning process. To me any thing that distracts attention among learners is what i may refer to as problem behavior. These are issues as referred to in our task 3. The question is managing these issues.

Thank you Stephen

It should not worry a teacher that the student has read ahead! That should be encouraged.

7.3 1 – old things and old ways – dedicated technology venues 9 years, 5 months agoOld things old ways: Low density labs. These are the questions i have come up about the pictures:
1. How will the teacher deal with delays in task execution?
2. How will the students quickly access the shared information with a few computers available?
3. How will the teacher aviod redundancy likely to happen when all the students dont heve access…[Read more] -

7.3 3 – new things and old ways – will old tactics work with mobile technologies? 9 years, 5 months agoI teach in a Teachers’ College that trains Secondary school teachers in Uganda. The rate at which the possession of mobile devices has proliferated in the recent past poses a great opportunity for the use of the mobile devices for learning purposes. At least 80% of the students possess smart phones, a good number has tablets, MP3 potable media p…[Read more]

You have Saïd it Charles, teachers in fact must use new technologies and Harness it in thé way it is meant to ne used ie interactively , this will d’or sûre engage them and cause
authentic learning. -
Accurate analysis Charles, what we need to do as teachers and curriculum developers is to re-align our pedagogical approaches to match with the current technological advances so that we can make use of mobile devices to enhance learning. in this way we shall avoid substitution but rather move on to augmentation and even re-definition.

how I wish that possession of those technology gadgets would be true with primary and secondary. it would do the same to those teachers too.
-
Charles,
Am of the same belief that the new can work with the old ways. Just wanted you to reflect over the following questions:
-What are the old ways in teaching?
-What are the old ways in learning?
Despite the proliferation of devices think what is vital for new vs old to work is much more emphasis on how the two should be streamlined/…[Read more]

The introduction of subsidiary ICT in secondary schools is a initiative by the Uganda government but its not smoothly moving because of the limited facilities like computers, whiteboard, rooms and etc. We believe that most schools still use…[Read more]

Very true , one computer, some times they even have more but they only use the devices in the classrooms. We have not thought of learning beyond classroom walls. And this takes us back to old basket.e

I wish to agree with Mr. Bulamba that the current way mobile technologies are integrated in teaching is like doing new things in old ways. The very old pedagogies are still being used to teach using the mobile devices. However, I see good potential for learning using the mobile devices if pedagogy can be changed to suit the new wave of mobile…[Read more]

True Martin and Sulaiman. The unwillingness of teachers to let learners use their personal devices in studying which by the way could be more efficient than the one computer in class makes it difficult for them to fully infuse technology in their teaching.
It could be that they are not well grounded in the integration of ICT in the teaching and…[Read more] -
the technology tools used in schools, what i have noted that the teachers have not realized their potential. they simply don’t know what they can do (the extent)

There is an increasing inclination towards Tablet computing, which presents new opportunities to enhance learning experiences in ways simply not possible with mobile phones, laptops or desktops and is especially suited for one-to-one learning environments.
